Dr. Vicki Norton is a community emergency physician in Florida and is a partner in one of the few independent, democratic groups in the state. She has served as clinical affiliate faculty for Florida Atlantic University since 2021 and enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students and scribes working in the emergency department.
Dr. Norton graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001 with a B.S. in Biology. From there, she conducted research under Dr. Frank Longo, chair of the Department of Neurology at UNC, studying genes that could play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. She left North Carolina in 2003 to start medical school at Drexel University College of Medicine, graduating in 2007. She completed her emergency medicine residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, in 2010. After residency, she moved to Florida and began working as an emergency medicine attending.
After seeing and experiencing firsthand the treatment of emergency physicians employed by contract management groups, she became more involved in AAEM in order to better advocate for herself and her colleagues. She has served on several AAEM committees, including the Membership, Women’s, and State Chapters committees. She joined the Florida Chapter Division of AAEM Board of Directors and held various positions before becoming President from 2017 to 2019. She also co-chaired the Women in Emergency Medicine committee from 2018 to 2020 and oversaw the transition of the committee to a formal section of AAEM. She was a panelist for “Women Leaders in Emergency Medicine” at the Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Congress (MEMC) in Dubrovnik in 2019. She was the 2020 James Keaney Leadership Award recipient for outstanding contributions to AAEM. In 2021, she presented a talk at the Health Policy in Emergency Medicine (HPEM) meeting in Washington DC entitled “State of Emergency: State Legislative Issues & Effective Campaign Strategies.” She has served on the AAEM PAC Advisory Committee and Lobbyist Task Force since 2022. Most recently, she presented a plenary talk at the 2024 AAEM Scientific Assembly on the topic of “Advocacy in Emergency Medicine.”
Dr. Norton is a strong proponent of gender equity, diversity in medicine, advocacy, and fair workplace environments. One of her goals is to remove the corporate and private equity influence from medicine and allow doctors to get back to what they do best: taking care of patients. She is married to Brian Norton, and together they have three children as well as a menagerie of pets. She has been honored to serve on the AAEM Board of Directors since 2020.
