Our Small Group Clinics are designed to provide more personal and hands-on education sessions at a national conference. For those who want an alternative to the PowerPoint/lecture format, the Small Group Clinics provide a one-to-six teacher to participant ratio.
Physicians, residents, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants are able to register for up to two of our nine 30-minute sessions available concurrent with the traditional lecture sessions at no additional cost to you! Advanced registration is required.
Advanced Registration
You can sign-up for a small group clinic when you register for Scientific Assembly. There is no additional cost for these sessions, however advanced registration is required. A maximum of two sessions are allowed per attendee. The clinics are open to physicians, residents, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Medical students are not eligible to attend the Small Group Clinics.
Onsite Registration
Twenty-five of the time slots per session will be filled in advance. The remaining 5 slots will be filled on a “first-come, first-served” basis by signing up onsite. Please see the AAEM registration desk onsite for more information.

Internalized, interpersonal, and structural racism is of paramount importance for healthcare professionals, given the disproportionate impact on the health of communities of color and marginalized identities. The Health Equity Skills Simulation is a workshop focused on training participants on cultural competencies related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). Through high fidelity simulation exercises, participants will learn advanced health equity communications skills needed to effectively address microaggressions and racist attitudes and behaviors in a clinical setting. Participants will be able to practice advanced health equity communication skills with a standardized patient and receive feedback on improving these skills.
Rapid Goals of Care and Communication Workshop

Goals of care conversations are vital in the emergency department, however time constraints and high stress situations can make them challenging. In this session, you will master goals of care conversations utilizing role playing and rapid cycle deliberate practice. Ever wonder if that red light alarm was actually important? Or maybe the yellow light alarm? And the beeping? This session goes beyond “standard settings please” to explain each of the settings options, what they do, and when they are indicated and contraindicated. The session goes briefly over some of the more concerning alarms as well and will conclude with troubleshooting vents with hands-on diagnostics and solutions. It is critical for the emergency physician to be able to address ventilator issues directly, and this is a refresher foundational course.

Go beyond ventilator basics and take on challenging ventilator cases with real vents and diagnostics. COPD, asthma, refractory ARDS, abdominal compartment syndrome… This session will take management of these conditions beyond the theoretical classroom into a simulated setting with real ventilators and EM intensivists at bedside making responses to your maneuvers as realistic as possible. A low-fidelity simulation will be provided. If the management is not correct, we’ll take the case to the end and let you try again to perfect your management of these difficult cases. This is the safe place to make mistakes so your decisions are spot-on when it matters.

The Awake Fiberoptic Intubation

Fiberoptic intubation is an often discussed procedure, but is infrequently performed and even more rarely practiced in controlled situations. We will provide a hands-on experience on how to properly select patients for a fiberoptic approach, preparing the patient, and how to intubate. We will also discuss how to troubleshoot and alternative techniques such as nasotracheal approaches and hybrid techniques. These will be conducted on high-fidelity manikins to provide a low-stress environment to gain experience with this procedure.
Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure Workshop

When a newborn’s life is literally in your hands, would you know what to do? The next time you precipitously deliver a blue, floppy, neonate, would you know what immediate actions to take? What equipment is necessary? How to optimize ventilation? Obtain access? When to start compressions? When to intubate? Approximately 1-in-10 infants will require some form of resuscitation at the time of delivery, and that number is likely even higher if delivery occurs in the emergency department.
But don’t fear! This session is designed to tackle these questions by teaching neonatal resuscitation protocol (NRP) from the EM physician perspective in a small-group setting. Emphasis will be placed on ventilation strategies, use of the T-piece resuscitator, and umbilical catheter insertion. In addition, a real-life neonatologist will be available for real-time consultation!
