Working in emergency medicine in New York and/or Connecticut is an opportunity that is highly competitive, fast-paced, exhilarating, and not for the faint-hearted. Navigating through the process can be daunting and, at times, overwhelming. Want to learn tips to expand job/educational opportunities, plan your career route, and/or balance work/life expectations? Members of the NY-CT Regional Chapter Division are here for you and proud to provide an opportunity for medical students, residents, and young physicians working in New York and Connecticut to communicate and learn from a mentor to reach their goals.
Mentee: Medical Students, Residents, Young Physicians
Literature shows that people who are mentored in medicine are happier, are promoted faster, and have more successful careers.
- Medical students quickly recognize emergency medicine as a highly competitive field. Mentorship can help provide guidance in the arduous residency application process and help newly accepted residents transition successfully to their new role as an emergency medicine resident.
- Residents have to make many decisions about who, what, where, and why for their future. Mentors can assist with expanding job opportunities, navigating an early career in emergency medicine, and highlighting their strengths during the application process. Mentors will provide tips on comparing and reviewing contracts while preparing for the next phase in life.
- Young physicians are building careers, expanding their network, starting a family, and/or looking to grow academically or professionally. How do you balance it all? How do you manage debt? A mentor can provide the guidance you are seeking.
This program is mentee led. You are welcome to reach out to your mentor as often as you would like during the year.
Mentor: Residents and Attendings
The role of a mentor is a mix of a friend and a teacher. Your goal is to inspire and facilitate personal, academic, and career achievements for your mentee. Do you have what it takes to be a mentor? The relationship you develop becomes channels for sharing information, advice, support, and guidance. Mentors may offer:
- Information: Mentors share their knowledge, experiences, and wisdom
- Contacts: Mentors provide valuable opportunities facilitating academic, career, and personal contacts.
- Support: Mentors stimulate curiosity and build confidence by presenting new ideas, opportunities, and challenges.
- Goal Setting: Mentors help mentees discover talents and interests to define and attain their goals.
- Advice: Mentors guide mentees in reaching academic, career, and personal goals.
- Role Model: Mentors share stories of their own achievements, challenges, and successes.
The best mentor “wants your success as much as you do;” as the mentee, you have to work for and nurture the relationship for success.
Eligible applicants must be a NY-CT/AAEM Regional Chapter Division member (medical student, resident, or attending physician)
