AAEM/JEM Resident and Student Research Competition Oral Abstracts

The AAEM/JEM Resident and Student Research Competition is designed to recognize outstanding research achievements by residents and students in emergency medicine. The six highest-scored submissions are presented as oral abstracts on Monday, April 7, and the remaining abstracts are presented as posters on Tuesday, April 8.

Photo Competition

The Photo Competition features case reports and visual data that deliver educational value to the EM physician. Abstracts will include chief complaint, history of present illness, pertinent physical exam, clinical questions and answers, case discussion, pearls, and at least one photograph of the patient, pathology specimens, Gram stains, EKGs, and radiographic studies or other visual data. The accepted posters were selected based on the clinical value of the case, the clarity of images, and usefulness of clinical questions.

Top Posters will have a Guided Tour from 12:15pm-1:15pm.

AAEM/RSA & Western Journal of Emergency Medicine Population Health Research Competition Oral Abstracts

The AAEM/RSA and WestJEM Population Health Research Competition showcases resident and medical student research, specifically in areas that affect the health of populations of patients in and around the ED.

YPS-AAEM Research Competition Oral Abstracts

The YPS-AAEM Research Competition is designed to recognize outstanding research achievements by young physicians in emergency medicine. The top four abstracts are invited for an oral presentation at Scientific Assembly; the rest are invited to present posters on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.


When will I be notified if my abstract was accepted for AAEM25?

Answer: The notification for acceptance or declination of abstracts was sent on November 13, 2024 to the author who submitted the abstract in the submission portal. If you do not receive an email, please contact Roxanne Dobbs, AAEM Education and Program Manager.

How do I accept my abstract invitation to AAEM25?

Answer: The invitation email contains a link to confirm your participation. If you did not receive this email, please contact Roxanne Dobbs, AAEM Education and Program Manager.

Do I have to prepare a poster for my confirmed abstract?

Answer: The invitation email will list the presentation type. If the invitation is listed as “Poster Presentation”, you will need to prepare a poster accordingly.

If your invitation lists you as an oral presenter for the YPS-AAEM Research Competition and the AAEM and JEM Resident and Student Research Competition, you will not need to prepare a poster.

Photo Competition, AAEM and JEM Resident and Student Research Competition, and YPS-AAEM Research Competitions that are listed with the presentation type “Poster Presentation” will need to prepare a poster.

How can I print my poster?

Answer: All poster printing details are listed in the invitation email. Here are the details below:

Each presenter is responsible for printing their own poster, AAEM will not collect the files and send them to the printer. There is a FedEx within the Intercontinental Miami. Please email a PDF file of your poster to Claudia Baldasti. The subject line should list “AAEM25 – Presenter Full Name”. In the body of the email, please list a title of the poster, a pick-up date, a phone number for payment, and the person who will be picking up the poster.

The hours for the Intercontinental Miami are: Monday – Friday 7am – 7pm and Saturday 8am – 5pm. They are not open on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

The FedEx can receive your files from March 21st – April 5th for all paper sizes listed below. For any poster size listed 48”x96”, the deadline is April 3, 2025. To ensure your poster is printed on time, email Claudia Baldasti your PDF file by Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Once FedEx receives your email, a member of their staff will contact you for payment over the phone. They do not receive payment via email.

Posters can be printed any size in between these, but these are the most common. Turnaround time: 24 hours (except for the 48×96, FedEx needs at least 48 hours), not including weekends.

I cannot attend AAEM25. Can I send someone to hang my poster or present my oral abstract presentation on my behalf?

Answer: Yes. If you or a team member cannot attend AAEM25, please contact Roxanne Dobbs for further instructions.  

Do I have to stand next to my poster at AAEM25?

Answer: We strongly encourage you to stand next to your poster during the lunch hour Poster Presentations at 12:15pm – 1:15pm to engage with conference attendees and answer questions about your poster.

The planning committee will select 24 Top Posters in January. Top Poster presenters will give a short, 4-minute presentation and Q&A during the lunch hour Poster Presentations.

Do I have to register to AAEM25 to present my poster or oral abstract?

Answer: Everyone who is attending Scientific Assembly in Miami, FL must register for AAEM25, including oral abstract and poster presenters and co-presenters. More details on registration can be found here.

Does everyone listed on the poster or oral presentation need to register for AAEM25?

Answer: Only the presenters and co-presenters who will be attending Scientific Assembly in Miami need to register for the conference. If a co-presenter cannot attend the conference, they do not need to register for AAEM25.

Are there any compensations or stipends available to present at AAEM25?

Answer: There are no stipends or compensations available for poster or oral abstracts at AAEM25.

How do I prepare my oral abstract presentation?

Answer: Presenters must bring their slides in Microsoft PowerPointTM format on a portable USB drive. If you wish to use a Keynote or other Mac presentation, please bring your own Mac laptop and connecters (dongles.) You may use a slide template from your institution or a slide template of your own design. The screens are 16:9 ratio. You do not need to submit slides in advance. Please bring your slides directly to the presentation room.

A PC laptop, projection screen, and slide advancer will be provided. Internet connection is not provided in the meeting room; links to videos or online resources will not be available. There will be no AV technician in the room. You will be asked to plug in your presentation and begin speaking.
