Medical students, are you ready for some competition? Get ready to put your ultrasound skills and teamwork to the test! In this competition, five teams will embark on a journey of five simulated patient scenarios with live patient models. Each scenario will be based on a chief complaint, and you will use ultrasound to solve the case.Teams are scored based on how many action steps they complete during each case. There are ~8 action steps per case (40 total.)

The overall highest-scoring team after all five scenarios is the winner! Winners will be announced during the Medical Student Track at AAEM25 on Monday, April 7, 2025. The winners will receive free AAEM/RSA and EUS-AAEM swag as an award.

The Open Mic Competition is designed for new speakers to be heard and evaluated by a panel of judges and conference attendees. Each speaking slot is 20 minutes (18 minutes for presentation, 2 minutes for questions.) Presentations can be on any topic relevant to the practice of emergency medicine.

The 3^rd Annual CCMS-AAEM Breviloquent Competition will highlight the presentation skills of five individuals interested in the emerging field of emergency medicine critical care. The competition format is a seven-minute presentation provided on less than 25 slides.

The theme of this year’s competition is “A Memorable Case Experienced in the ICU.”

Hosted during the 31st AAEM Annual Scientific Assembly in Miami, this cutting-edge event combines the precision of academic medicine with the high-energy spirit of gaming.

What to Expect:

A multi-modal competition featuring high-stakes rounds like:

• SONOMasters: Ultrasound expertise in action.
• SIMBOSS: Mastery of simulation and clinical communication.
• EM-IQ Quiz: A brain-bending test of emergency medicine knowledge.

Teams will navigate intense challenges to emerge as EM Idol, seizing the prestigious Kevin Rogers Cup. Please see the rule book for more information.

Team Details:

• Each team must consist of three residents and one faculty mentor from the same institution.
• Only one team per institution can compete, making the stakes even higher.

How to Participate:

• Registration Opens: December 16, 2024. Please see page 3 of the rule book for instructions on how to register.
• Teams must submit a 30-second intro video by March 1, 2025. Creativity and enthusiasm are key!

Answer: The invitation email contains a link to confirm competition participation. If you did not receive this email, please contact Roxanne Dobbs, AAEM Education and Program Manager.

Answer: No. The competitions showcase speaking and technical skills. They do not require posters. If you are presenting a research abstract or case report, please visit the Abstracts page or refer to your invitation email to determine if you need to prepare a poster.  

Answer: All poster printing details are listed in the invitation email. Here are the details below:

Each presenter is responsible for printing their own poster, AAEM will not collect the files and send them to the printer. There is a FedEx within the Intercontinental Miami. Please email a PDF file of your poster to Claudia Baldasti. The subject line should list “AAEM25 – Presenter Full Name”. In the body of the email, please list a title of the poster, a pick-up date, a phone number for payment, and the person who will be picking up the poster.

The hours for the Intercontinental Miami are: Monday – Friday 7am – 7pm and Saturday 8am – 5pm. They are not open on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

The FedEx can receive your files from March 21^st – April 5^th for all paper sizes listed below. For any poster size listed 48”x96”, the deadline is April 3, 2025. To ensure your poster is printed on time, email Claudia Baldasti your PDF file by Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Once FedEx receives your email, a member of their staff will contact you for payment over the phone. They do not receive payment via email.

Heavyweight Coated Paper – $15 per square foot

Posters can be printed any size in between these, but these are the most common. Turnaround time: As little as two hours, but this depends on production at the time.

Banner Vinyl – $9 per square foot

Posters can be printed any size in between these, but these are the most common. Turnaround time: 24 hours (except for the 48×96, FedEx needs at least 48 hours), not including weekends.

Answer: Yes. If you or a team member cannot attend AAEM25, please contact Roxanne Dobbs for further instructions.

Answer: Yes. Everyone who is participating in the competition in Miami, FL must register for AAEM25. More details on registration can be found here.

Answer: Only the presenters who will be attending Scientific Assembly in Miami need to register for the conference. If a co-author or teammate cannot attend the conference, they do not need to register.

Answer: CCMS-AAEM Breviloquent Competition presenters will receive a $500 travel reimbursement after attending AAEM25, upon receiving the expense voucher and receipts.

Answer: Presenters must bring their slides in Microsoft PowerPoint^TM format on a portable USB drive. If you wish to use a Keynote or other Mac presentation, please bring your own Mac laptop and connecters (dongles.) You may use a slide template from your institution or a slide template of your own design. The screens are 16:9 ratio. You do not need to submit slides in advance. Please bring your slides directly to the presentation room.

A PC laptop, projection screen, and slide advancer will be provided. Internet connection is not provided in the meeting room; links to videos or online resources will not be available. There will be no AV technician in the room. You will be asked to plug in your presentation and begin speaking.
