The American Academy of Emergency Medicine affirms the right to strike by emergency physicians at Ascension St John’s Hospital in Detroit and supports the physicians in their attempts to bargain for a fair contract that addresses their concerns about their clinical practice environment created by the corporate practice of medicine. AAEM is committed to ensuring emergency physicians work in an environment where they can provide high quality patient care without constraints placed upon them by administrators and business entities.
All healthcare entities have moral obligations to ensure patient safety and quality of care. AAEM advocates for these moral obligations to supersede financial considerations. Consequently, AAEM strongly urges TeamHealth and Ascension St John Hospital to come to the table to discuss these issues and agree to a contract that will address the concerns raised by the Greater Detroit Association of Emergency Medicine as soon as possible.
