The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) recently released a public statement in response to an announcement that a nurse practitioner was accepted into an Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship program. We were specifically responding to the original statement by the program which when released stated, “his appointment as the ‘first-ever’ APRN to the Point-of-Care Ultrasound Training Fellowship.”
Since our statement was released in response, AAEM has since been informed that the exact details of the NP’s appointment were initially misstated, and the individual is actually in a “Certificate Program.” While we cannot verify the exact difference this makes, in light of this new information, AAEM has chosen to remove the prior statement from its website.
Know that the AAEM will always fight to ensure proper training of EM physicians and will continue to engage with residents, fellows, and attendings across the country to ensure respect for our specialty as well as continue high standards.
